The A2 for the show was Jon Lukason, who graduated from NEIA. Thursday was set day where they spent much of the day getting to know the building, production people, and needs of everybody. Rick spent much of his time setting up communications for all the different production staff, and Jeremy helped Jon set up mics and coms inside Symphony Hall. They sat through several rehearsals before they were done for the day, making sure that all of the different feeds, cameras, and communications were working properly.
Friday was the show day. They began in the morning by recording some voiceovers with the event host, Ahmad Rashad in the production trailer. Jon and Jeremy also spent some time on Friday helping out the A2 for the Red Carpet show, rewiring a com unit out front, as well as getting mics onto the cameras out front for his show.
During the show, Jeremy sat in the production trailer with Rick and Jon, experiencing the sometimes complex workings behind a live broadcast. Once the show was over, Jon and IJeremy headed out into Symphony Hall to strike all their gear. On the way in, they bumped shoulders with Barkley, Jordan, Bird, and the rest of the ’92 Dream Team, as they made a quick escape out the back door.

Educators are encouraged to contact Matt Lyons through the ALMA web site for more information. Design submissions will be due to ALMA in late October.

The ALMA Symposium theme “Loudspeakers: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” celebrates the 50th anniversary of the founding of ALMA, the only international trade association dedicated to improving the design and manufacture of loudspeakers. The 2011 program will highlight the 50-year legacy of ALMA and the loudspeaker industry. Stu Lumsden, President of ALMA and Vice President of Engineering at Polk Audio said, “The creation of this student design competition is an excellent opportunity to involve students in the real practical challenges of loudspeaker design today and highlight ALMA’s 50th anniversary. This industry is one of the most interesting, fun and dynamic fields in which students can apply their engineering skills. We need the best and the brightest, and as an industry we want to extend a hand to new talent.”

To find out more about the competition, speaking, exhibiting or attending this show, please contact Carol Bousquet, Executive Director, ALMA International. It was always my pleasure to see him each year at the AES convention. Emil always took the time to talk with me and the mere fact that this well-accomplished man in my field generously availed himself to me was a reminder of why the AES is such a great organization.
Emil's career in Audio Engineering began in 1958, when he joined the professional staff of CBS Laboratories. It was the beginning of a twenty-eight year association, which resulted in more than sixty technical publications and sixteen U. S. patents, a number of which were awarded
for his inventions of audio signal processing devices for broadcast and recording applications. As the CBS Vice President for Audio Technology, Emil led all advanced audio and acoustics research for the CBS Radio and Television and for CBS Records. He also served as Director of R & D for the CBS Musical Instruments Division which included such companies as Steinway Pianos and Fender Guitars.
Emil Torick’s most lasting accomplishment came not from his great scientific mind but from his heart. He started in 1984, and ran for 25 years, the AES foundation which has awarded thousands of dollars to almost 200 students pursuing graduate degrees in the field of audio. This work lives on as scholarship funds that can be applied for each year. If you are an audio student, you might want to look into this great opportunity that was made possible by Emil Torick. More information about the AES Foundation can be found at www.aes.org/education/foundation/.
-John Krivit
But as impressive as these achievements are, Sir George has achieved much besides in an audio industry career that began as a humble assistant at EMI's Abbey Road studios in 1950. He was one of the first independent producers, leaving his tenure as an EMI staff producer in 1965 to set up Associated Independent Recordings (AIR), he helped to establish the concept of producers receiving a percentage of sales income on the records they help to create, and was instrumental in founding AIR studios in Central London and Montserrat in the 1970s and 80s, and latterly in the 90s in Hampstead (as AIR Lyndhurst). He has been actively involved in the audio industry throughout his career, and remains President of the Association of Professional Recording Services (APRS), the first professional body to look after the interests of those working at all levels of the UK audio industry. With this year's Convention taking place in London, the APRS have had an important role to play in organising some of this year's most prestigious AES industry seminars, making the presentation of the Honorary Membership to Sir George a fitting event for the final day of the Convention.

“The AES is delighted to present George Martin with this award,” comments AES Executive Director Roger Furness. “The ranks of those who have previously received an AES Honorary Membership include Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, Walt Disney, and Herbert von Karajan, and I can think of no finer addition to their number than Sir George Martin. We’re also excited to welcome Masataka Goto to London to deliver the Keynote Address at the opening ceremony — we expect a good time will be had by all who can attend.”

Masataka Goto's address will be delivered at 12.30 on Saturday May 22nd, whilst the presentation to Sir George will take place before the final AES/APRS-organised seminar at the Convention, at 2pm, Tuesday May 25th. All visitors to the AES Convention are welcome to attend.
